A walking diary for your city

How much of your city have you actually seen?

UNBEEN saves each walk with the photos and notes you took along the way, and colours in every street you've been down. After a few weeks you start to see how much of your city you've never walked.

Try it on your next walk home.

Sound familiar?

Most of us walk the same few routes for years.

  • Home to work, work to home.
  • The café where they already know your order.
  • The same loop with the dog after dinner.
  • The shortcut to the metro you could walk with your eyes shut.

And two blocks away there's a street you've passed a hundred times and never once walked down.

  • Narrow stone stairway lit by a warm window at dusk

The steps you keep meaning to climb one day.

  • A lit shop window on a Porto corner at night

Lit up every evening. You've still never gone in.

  • Empty tram tracks running down a Porto street at night

Where do these tracks even go?

  • A dog leaning out of a ground-floor window

This one knows the block better than you do.

One walk

Distance is the least interesting part.

Tap start and put your phone back in your pocket. The route records itself.

  • Take a photoof whatever made you stop.
  • Record a short videowhen a photo won't do.
  • Write a noteand it stays pinned to that exact spot.

Back home, it's all in one entry, on the map where it happened.

The map

Every street you walk gets coloured in.

Walk down a street once and it stays lit on your map. After a few months the lines start joining up, and the gaps between them get hard to ignore.

This is what one evening walk through Bonfim added.

The diary

Photos from a good walk end up between a screenshot and a receipt.

In UNBEEN they stay with the walk: the route, the photos, short videos and your notes, all on one page for that day.

You can scroll back to any evening and see exactly where you went.

Down to the river, the long way.

The river went gold for about four minutes. I stood there the whole time, and nobody else seemed to notice.

A reason to take the other turn

A small push to go one street further.

UNBEEN notices when there's an unwalked street right next to your usual route and suggests you try it. It also keeps count of what you find, so a week of short walks still adds up to something.

There are streaks too, if you like that sort of thing. Miss a day and nobody's going to make you feel bad about it.

  • One more walk and these two routes meet.About half a kilometre between them.

Feel like playing?

There's a game mode for when you're in the mood: close a loop on the map and the streets inside go to your team.

How Capture works
  1. Join one of four teams.
  2. Walk a route that ends where it began.
  3. Everything inside the loop turns your team's colour, until someone walks it back.

Your walks are private by default.

Nothing gets posted anywhere on its own. You share a walk only if you want to, and you pick exactly who sees it.

Why UNBEEN exists

A note from the founder

I wanted to remember where I'd actually been.

I walk a lot, and I'm always taking photos and writing things down. But the routes lived in one app and the photos in my camera roll, and I could never put a walk back together afterwards.

And even after years in the same city, I kept stumbling onto streets I'd somehow never walked down.

So I built one app for both.

It remembers my walks for me, and every so often it nudges me down a street I haven't tried.

Maksim, founder of UNBEEN

There are still streets you've unbeen.

Your routes and notes stay private unless you choose to share them.
